Gingrich on Ex-wife's Interview: ABC Acted Like 'an Arm of Romney Campaign'

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich denounced ABC News for acting like an “arm of the [Mitt] Romney campaign” with its interview with his former wife Thursday night in the run-up to the South Carolina primary Saturday.

"It was totally inappropriate," Gingrich said today on "Face the Nation" on CBS in response to a question about the ABC interview with ex-wife Marianne, who accused the former House speaker of infidelity and said he pressed her for an "open marriage."

"It was almost as though ABC was an arm of the Romney campaign, deliberately trying to set the stage and rig the game," Gingrich said. "People just repudiated it. I was amazed at how intense the feeling was."

The ABC interview sparked fireworks even before it aired, during a GOP presidential debate Thursday night, when CNN moderator John King lit the fuse and asked Gingrich for his reaction.

"I think the disruptive, vicious, negative nature of the news media makes it harder to govern this country," Gingrich fumed at King. "I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that."

Also on “Face the Nation” today, Gingrich insisted that Romney established a liberal record as governor of Massachusetts, saying, "He had been pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase. Despite his advertisements, it was clear he was way to the left of South Carolinians."
